China Spring’s Hannah Antunes is just one stroke off the pace for a state championship.
The sophomore shot a 1-under 71 at Legends Golf Club in Kingsland on Monday, opening up her run at the UIL State Girls Golf Championships. She sits just a stroke behind Lumberton freshman Annie Whitehead, who defeated Antunes in a playoff at the regional tournament last month.
Antunes carded rounds of 75 and 76 at last year’s state tournament to claim a silver medal.
Antunes got off to a strong start, tallying birdies on the par-4 No. 2 and par-5 No. 6 holes. She later picked up her first bogey of the round on No. 8, but recovered for a birdie to open the back nine on the par-4 10th hole.
She finished by parring seven of her final eight holes, interrupted only by a bogey on 14.
She’ll get her chance to swing for the title in Tuesday’s final round.
